What is the GMAT?

The GMAT or Graduate Management Admissions Test is a standardised computer-adaptive test conducted globally by GMAC. Accepted for nearly 7000 master’s programmes by over 2300 business schools, the GMAT is one of the most popular tests taken up by professionals and graduates looking to apply to postgraduate courses in business and management.

The GMAT is scored on a scale of 200-800 and is timed at 3 hours and 7 minutes.  Furthermore, the GMAT comprises four main sections and they are as follows:

  1. Analytical writing assessment
  2. Integrated reasoning
  3. Quantitative reasoning
  4. Verbal reasoning

While the above-mentioned score is the overall GMAT score that you can achieve, each section has its scoring scale. The table mentioned below comprises a detailed breakdown of each section’s duration, question types and scoring pattern.

How Do You Register for the GMAT?

To register for the GMAT and schedule the exam dates, you need to create an account on the official website. Once you have created your account, you can complete the registrations by entering all your personal details that are required. The final step of the registration process involves paying a fee of $250. The GMAT exam fees in India are also the same; however, the amount when converted to rupee is around INR. 18,717, which is subject to the foreign exchange rates prevailing at the time of your registration process.

How to Prepare for the GMAT?

Preparing for the GMAT is no easy task and it requires step-by-step planning to study the vast GMAT syllabus. However, before you begin to purchase expensive guides and start reading cover-to-cover, we encourage you to take a mock test so as to get an idea of your level of proficiency with the concepts of GMAT verbal and quantitative reasoning. Based on the scores you receive on your mock test, you should design a study schedule with the right amount of time dedicated for you to complete each section. Make sure your plan includes taking more mock tests to gauge your progress. Once you are confident and feel fully prepared, you should register, pay the GMAT fees and take the exam.
