Career Summary And Mission Statement
Congradulations! You've taken the eight critical steps towards
assessing your work and life experience and deducing where you would
best fit into the workplace. Now it's time to boil down what
you've learned into a personal mission statement. The answers
to the questions of what you want to do with the rest of your career,
and where you ought to do it, didn't come to you without though.
You had to do your homework and engage in much soul searching to find
your direction. On the other hand, now that you've identified
what you want from your career and where you're likely to find it,
you can capture it on paper as a first step to reentering the workplace.
Write a few sentences that describe who you are and where you're going.
The result is your mission statement. Personal mission statements
have helped many people focus their job searches and sell themselves
to employers. You can also transform an abbrviated mission statement
into the career summary on your resume.
Your mission statement sets forth your current goals. These may change during
the course of your job search and beyond. For that reason, you'll want to reevaluate
your mission statement once a year. Each time you update your mission statement,
you should project five years into the future, even though you may well change it
in the interim to keep pace with your personal and career growth. Your five-year
mission statement provides you with a long-range plan and reminds you of your shorter-term
goals. It serves as your road map and your beacon, so don't be shy about framing
yours and hanging it in a prominent place where you can see it every day.
Good luck in following your dreams!
